As the common name implies these specimens were taken by hand from Goldenrod flower heads. This is by the way not a good common name for this spider, as it is found on so many different plants and the goldenrod is just one at the very end of its season.

That's a good point, John. However, the American Arachnological Society's Common Names Committee established that one back in 2003. I'm not a strong supporter of common names, but for most people, they are easier to remember than binomial nomenclature. Have you come across other common names for M. vatia? I can add any common name for the nine species in Spider WebWatch and welcome these because it allows for better search exposure.
