First day of frost this fall. Spotted one spider in tall frosty, grass. These spiders in this location seem to face away from the rising sun. They rest on west side of web. Wonder if this is common for this spider and, if so, why. Anyone have thoughts about this?

I normally don't look for spiders, but I nearly put my hand through this web while transplanting iris. The web is on red-hot poker plant not far from the ground.
Your site had best photos and descriptions to identify it. Let me know if this isn't a correct match. I believe I've seen immature ones previously but ignored them. This one is too big to ignore. Hope my hubby doesn't see her or she'll be a goner.
I also have underside photo if that would be better to post.

Added: Oct 21, 2009 at 1:04:35 PM MSTvery large and beautiful female spider with web. first sighting of this spider in our area for us. her garden is situated in a field so the habitat seems perfect.
the spider disappeared with the first frost in mid october. hope she got to get her eggs situated!
her friend took a picture of topside and underside on his blackberry, but it was blurry. the underside is fascinating too.

Took an early morning stroll through the field behind my home to admire the dewy webs and count bandeds.
Of the males I found, 2 were with one female on her web, the others were all solo.
The pic attached is of a male on the left and a dew-bejewelled female onthe right.Interestingly, very few webs had any stabilamentum (I would say about 10%). In those that did it was small and only a couple were distinct. Admittedly, most of the webs were located in very thick field grass, and lower rather than higher in the grass. Those with some stabilamentum tended to be in lower grasses where there were tufts of taller grasses and other plants.
Many of the webs were also incomplete at the centre, so perhaps they had not quite finished off their artwork. -

I found this spider on the side of my home.. It was a metallic silver in colour with long brown legs with black stripes on the legs.. The body was fairly flat... I have contacted Point Pelee National park and emailed them photos of this spider in hopes to get a response as to the type of spider it is,, I have never seen a spider like this before .. Google brought up many that look similar to it, but none that look identical to it.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Added: Sep 16, 2008 at 8:18:02 PM MSTTwo surprises:
I happened to snap a photo of what I thought was an Argiope aurantia spider I observed and realized I identified it incorrectly! I believe this is a banded garden spider.
I shot this photo thinking it had an egg sac beneath it, but upon closer review I found it was finishing up a meal instead!
I guess my eyes are bad! Enjoy.
