I found four large female Misumena vatia while on my spider walk today.  All four were solid white.  One was hiding in a pink butterflyy bush flower spike, one was on a white butterfly bush, one was between the petals of a coreopsis plant in my shade garden and the last was on a catnip flower cluster.

I spotted a couple of misumena vatia over the past few days on our rugosa roses.  What struck me as interesting is that the one with all-white opaque coloring matched perfectly with the white roses (where it was "hiding") and the other with the bright pink lines seemed to fit right in with the dark pink roses with white streaks on the base of their petals.  I wonder if they know how well they're camouflaged...  I'll try to get some good pictures.

Misumena vatia (Joseph Guzik [Jul 23, 2008])Female on neighbor's plant.  Didn't know what it was at first.  Kids thought they were going to get bitten.  She's a beauty though.

Misumena vatia (Pamela Martin [Aug 17, 2007])Now that the goldenrod is in bloom I've been hoping to see a Misumena vatia enjoying it. This morning I found this yellow adult female enjoying a fly on goldenrod, out in the fields. The numbers of these spiders in the garden is way down, though there are a few on the Buddleia and the anemone just coming into flower.

Didn't get a photo, but I'll try tomorrow.  This large female was in a butterfly bush.  We've got plenty of yellow-jackets, butterflies, moths, etc. for it to hunt in the garden.  Looks like a good biological control for the annoying insects.

Misumena vatia (Pamela Martin [Jul 24, 2007])My least favourite part of aging is presbyopia--but perhaps I could learn to enjoy the surprises it leads to. I found this yellow Misumena vatia on some Queen Anne's Lace in the yard. Took a photo, and low and behold, two more spiders (in the lower left quadrant), both white, one clearly a flower crab but I think not the same species, the other, whose legs just show from the other side of the flower, also a flower crab spider, species unknown. I had no idea they were there when I took the photo--too small for me to see without my reading glasses.
